Muslim Contributions to Civilization

Building on the understanding that all civilizations are interconnected and influence and interact with one another, the speaker will highlight the contributions of Muslims from the so-called Golden Age of Islam in the medieval period to the present in a multitude of fields, from art, literature, philosophy, and architecture to cuisine, clothing, and furniture. They will describe the impact of these contributions, not only in regions where Muslims were the majority, but also where Muslims were key trading partners in Europe and beyond.

Throughout the presentation the speaker will entertain questions and have a discussion with the audience.

Ramadan and Fasting in Schools

The speaker opens by providing an overview of the topic of Ramadan and fasting, including a description of the month and the lunar calendar, the purpose and goals of fasting, how the fast functions, a look at a typical day in the life of a fasting person, and exemptions from fasting. They will then describe some of the challenges for fasting students and how best to accommodate them and conclude with a description of the holiday which celebrates the end of the fast, Eid ul-Fitr.

Throughout the presentation the speaker will entertain questions and have a discussion with the audience.
