Kayla Heard, Speaker

Kayla was born and raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where she began experiencing racism at a very young age. Her awareness led her on a path towards racial and social justice advocacy, primarily through education. Studying history, women and gender studies, and African and African American studies, Kayla has dedicated her life to the research and liberation of Black womyn and other minoritized groups. She currently works as a high school social studies teacher in Houston, Texas, and creates scholarship that challenges oppression and inequality. She received her Bachelor’s in Interdisciplinary Studies, African American studies, History, and Leadership Development, and her Master’s degrees in Liberal Arts and Sciences, both from Louisiana State University.
