This engaging and practical seminar equips college faculty and staff with the tools to better support Muslim and Arab students and to challenge Islamophobia and anti-Arab bias within academic and campus environments. Through a blend of pre-workshop preparation—including brief readings, a self-assessment quiz on bias, and a case-based reflection worksheet—participants will arrive ready to engage in meaningful discussion and shared learning.

The workshop explores the diversity of Muslim and Arab identities, the historical and contemporary presence of these communities in the United States, and effective ways to respond to common misconceptions. Participants will gain a nuanced understanding of Islamophobia and anti-Arab bias—their definitions, roots, and intersections with other forms of discrimination—and examine their impact on campus life and belonging.

Interactive exercises and real-life case studies invite participants to apply inclusive strategies for supporting Muslim and Arab students in both everyday interactions and during periods of heightened political tension. This seminar offers a vital opportunity to deepen awareness, advance interreligious and intercultural understanding, and strengthen the campus commitment to equity, inclusion, and care for all members of the academic community.

Speakers: Zachary Markwith, PhD [Bio]  and Maha Elgenaidi [Bio]
