06/23/11 – Over the 2010-2011 school year, ING speakers delivered presentations and panels to diverse audiences consisting of 490 presentations that reached 24,500individuals face-to-face. Audiences ranged from healthcare providers, institutions of higher education, and faith based networks to middle and high schools. While the bulk of ING’s presentations are still in schools, adult audiences attended over 40% of ING’s presentations.
Sixty-nine percent of the presentations were delivered by speakers from the Islamic Speakers Bureau (ISB), and 31% by the Interfaith Speakers Bureau (IFSB). The IFSB expands the educational outreach work of ING by partnering with interfaith organizations. Every panel includes a Muslim presenter with one or more speakers representing Buddhism, Christianity, Judaism or Hinduism.
After each ING presentation, surveys were given to measure the impact of the presentation on the respective audience. The data from 1,600 individuals found a significant shift in perceptions. For instance, audience discomfort around Muslims declined from 27% before a presentation to 7% after an ING presentation. Also, views towards Islam as being oppressive towards women dropped from 12% before a presentation to 4% subsequent to an ING presentation. This impact of ING presentations demonstrates the need for cultural literacy and dialogue to dispel common misconceptions and help build tolerance in our communities.
Islamic Speakers Bureau Training at the ISNA Annual Convention
Have you always wanted to respond to inaccurate information about Muslims but didn’t know how? Have you been asked to speak about your faith but were afraid to? Here is your opportunity to learn how to educate others about American Muslims and their faith.
We invite you to attend our upcoming Islamic Speakers Bureau (ISB) training workshop to help promote safer communities, increase cultural competency, and prevent discrimination in our communities. ING will be conducting training for speakers and spokespeople who are interested in joining an existing ING affiliated Islamic Speakers Bureau (ISB), initiating their own bureau or becoming an independently certified speaker. Since 1993, the ISB program has been the core of the outreach efforts of ING to increase religious & cultural literacy and promote mutual respect among people of all faiths and none.
