On Wednesday, March 8th, an ING senior trainer delivered ING’s Healthcare training to a group of nursing students at UCSF. The students were interested to learn about Islam’s view of sickness and health, as well as specific protocols relating to religious practices, gender interaction, diet, end of life issues and other areas of concern to health care providers. ING’s health care presentation is increasingly requested not only by health care providers, but also chaplains who provide spiritual care as well as support services for patients of all faiths. This and other related presentations are being further developed and expanded by ING staff as well as health care professionals thanks to funding from a grant by the California Endowment.

An ING speaker addressed the issue of Women in Islam at the Understanding Islam Conference hosted by Dominican University of CA and the International Association of Sufism which tool place on Saturday, March 11th in San Rafael, CA. Joining the all day event which was attended by about 150 people from various faiths and backgrounds, ING also participated in the hour long Q & A session which involved all the speakers at the conclusion of the conference. The event was not only a good forum for clearing up misconceptions about Islam, but for networking with other faith leaders.

ING Speakers Address Various Faith Groups, 3/13 – 3/14

Within a two-day period, ING speakers addressed three separate faith gatherings. The first was Grace Baptist Women’s Mission Group, in Campbell, CA; the second was the Women’s Fellowship of the First Congregational in Los Altos, and the third was the Jewish Community Relations Council of San Francisco. Since 9/11, the number of requests from faith-based organizations has risen dramatically, with the bulk requesting an overview of Islam and Muslims. Reaching out to religious groups is critical in the increasingly polarized climate, and emphasizing our similarities rather than the issues that divide us is equally important.
