Joining our fellow Americans, the Muslim community of the San Francisco Bay Area is deeply shocked and horrified by the tragic events in New York and Washington. “Our first and foremost thoughts go out to the victims, their families and loved ones. There is no foundation in any religion, in Islam in particular; that would support such horrific acts against innocent civilians,” said Helal Omeira of the Council on American-Islamic Relations. We unequivocally condemn this; any and all terrorist attacks as a strike against all civilized values; and hope for the quick apprehension of the perpetrators and the swift application of justice.
“As both Americans and Muslims, we have the dual responsibility of sharing the grief and sorrow of the nation while offering our prayers and resources to the friends and families of the victims of this horrible tragedy. At the same time, we have to cope with the backlash that has resulted from media associations between the terrorists and the Middle East,” said Maha ElGenaidi, of the Islamic Networks Group. We appeal therefore to the media to exercise restraint even if the perpetrators prove to be people who profess to be Muslim. The religion of Islam unequivocally repudiates such acts, and we believe that the God of Justice will call those responsible to account.
Please join your American Muslim neighbors Wednesday evening for vigil in remembrance of the victims and prayers for their families. Please bring your own candles.
