Resources about 9/11 and the Taliban to Supplement an Existing Lesson Plan

How can educators teach their students about the September 11th, 2001 attacks, the return of the Taliban to power in Afghanistan, and other historical and current events and topics? Below are ING resources that can be used to supplement lessons in the classroom:

  • As we approach the 20-year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, students may be unfamiliar with the details of this tragic event and its aftermath. Please visit our resource page for teaching about 9/11, which includes our statement, editorials by Muslim Americans, and guided questions that can be used as part of a lesson plan in the classroom. We also include a video and article by Dr. Amaarah DeCuir on culturally responsive teaching for 9/11 lesson plans that counter anti-Muslim racism and bullying in the classroom. View ING’s resource page for teaching about 9/11 here.
  • ING has also released a statement: “A Muslim American Perspective on the Return of the Taliban in Afghanistan.” This statement discusses the history and identity of the Taliban, the rights and plight of Afghan women, the Taliban’s interpretation of Sharia or “Islamic law”, and our concern and sympathies for the Afghan people. Read the statement here, which includes links to questions and answers about Islam, the Taliban, Sharia, and women.
  • In preparation for the fall, teachers can also take advantage of the many free resources in our educator toolkit to help promote religious and cultural literacy in their classrooms.
  • You are also invited to attend ING’s upcoming webinar on “Lessons Learned Post-9/11: Strengthening Community and Building Intercultural Connections, Allyship, and Solidarity.” On Thursday, September 9th from 5:00-6:30pm PDT we will be hosting a panel discussion with speakers from diverse religious, racial and ethnic communities on how 9/11 impacted them and what lessons they have learned. This webinar will be held on Zoom and Facebook Live. Register here.
