Spike in Requests for High School Presentations as School Year Ends, 5/06

ING historically experiences a jump in requests from Bay Area high schools for presentations about Islam and Muslims as the school year draws to a close in the month of May. Typically, high schools are more flexible in their teaching about Islam and Muslims. Requests generally come from high school World History classes, but also are made by a variety of teachers in various subjects, including Ethnic Studies, Middle East Studies, African Studies, Women Studies and World Religion classes in high schools. While generally high schools make up about a quarter of all ING presentations, in May alone this year, we received requests for and delivered 22 presentations to 7 high schools. These schools were located around the Bay Area, from Watsonville to Santa Rosa delivered by a variety of ING speakers. They included: 6 presentations on Islam and Muslims at Lynbrook High School in San Jose on May 19th, 25th and 26th by Omar Ansari, Maha Elgenaidi and Youssef Ismail; 5 presentations on Islam and Muslims at Pajaro Valley High School in Watsonville on May 22nd by Nashwan Hamza; Presentations on Islam and Muslims at Piner High School in Santa Rosa on May 23rd by Ameena Jandali; Presentation on Islam and Muslims at Foothill High School in Pleasanton on May 23rd by Uzma Hussaini; 5 presentations on Islamic Contributions to Civilization at Evergreen Valley High School in San Jose on May 23rd by Youssef Ismail and Kushroo Shaikh; 3 presentations on Basic Tenets and History of Islam at Gateway High School in San Francisco on May 23rd by Naureen Moon and Khatija Afroze; and a presentation on Islam and Muslims with a Perspective on Contemporary Islam in the U.S. at Kehillah Jewish High School in Palo Alto on May 30th by Maha Elgenaidi. *********************************************
ING Speaker Addresses San Jose Sunrise Rotary Club, 5/25/06

An ING speaker addressed the San Jose Sunrise Rotary Club on Thursday, May 25th at their breakfast meeting. The topic was an Orientation on Islam and Muslims, as well contemporary issues facing Muslims worldwide and in the United States. It was obvious from their numerous questions that this was their first encounter with a Muslim, and many expressed their surprise on learning about Islam’s commonalities with their own faiths. Since 9/11 ING speakers have been frequent speakers at Rotary and Kiwani Clubs, whose members often have had little or no interaction with American Muslims.

ING Speaker Presents in Intimate Home Gathering in Palo Alto, 5/30/06

An ING speaker addressed an intimate group of 45 people at the private home of a Palo Alto couple Tuesday evening on May 30th. The couple had previously attended an ING presentation at their church and wanted to share it with friends. They had requested the speaker to cover the basics of Islam, as well as the topic of women and families, and challenges of current events for American Muslims. The smallness of the group, and informal setting enhanced the sense of sharing and relating, and by the end of the evening, attendees and presenter all felt a sense of connectivity and understanding, and a desire to learn more about each other’s religion and culture. This is not the first ING event of this kind, and is a highly affective way of building relationships.

ING Speaker and Physician Educates Stanford Medical Students, 6/06

Long time ING speaker and physician Sarah Azad addressed a group of students at Stanford’s School of Medicine on Tuesday, June 6th in a presentation about providing culturally sensitive healthcare for Muslim patients. The fact that Sarah is also a practicing OB/GYN herself made the presentation especially interesting and relevant for the students, who had specific medical as well as ethical questions.

ING’s healthcare presentation is becoming increasingly requested by a variety of healthcare providers and chaplains as the Muslim population in the Bay Area and the U.S. continues to increase and impact service providers in various sectors.

ING President Conducts Session at ISNA’s Leadership Development Center, 6/07-6/08

ING’s President Maha Elgenaidi was one of many scholars and experts to take part in ISNA’s Leadership Development Center’s (ILDC) Summer Institute Program for the second year. The first part of the program focuses on Communication for Leaders and Organizers, and teaches participants fundamental precepts and practices of inter-personal and group communication in organizational contexts. In the day and a half long session on Wednesday and part of Thursday, May 7th and 8th, she covered some of the basics concerning educational outreach and bridge building between Muslim Americans and Americans of other faiths with a focus on educational presentations and cultural competency training for public institutions.

ING Speaker Addresses Congregation Beth Am in Lost Altos Hills, 6/09

On Friday, June 9th, an ING speaker delivered an Orientation on Islam and Muslims to Congregation Beth Am in Los Altos Hills. The evening talk was attended by over a hundred people, and covered an overview of the basics, as well as a Q & A session at the end. This was the first opportunity many in the audience had to learn about Islam directly from a Muslim American rather than the media or books, and not surprisingly many had the usual questions about terrorism and women’s role in Islam. ING hopes to expand its relations with Jewish Americans and their organizations through sessions such as these and other partnerships ING enjoy with the Jewish Community Relations Councils of the Bay Area.
