A Reflection on the 2007 Pew Research Center report about Muslims in America, by Professor Ingrid Mattson of Hartford Seminary.Ingrid Mattson is also an ING advisor. This week the Pew Research Center released a report about Muslim Americans. I was among a group of academics who were consulted by the Pew as they were preparing a list of questions to be included in their poll. We academic advisors had no control over the final shape of the questionnaire, nor over the final analysis offered by Pew. Over the next year, we will see a number of experts in polling challenge some of the methods employed by Pew as well as their conclusions. Most scholars of American Islam are convinced that Pew’s estimate of the number of Muslim Americans is extremely low. The study simply does not take into account the extent to which Muslims withhold identifying their religious identity out of fear that this information will be misused. (San Jose, 6/6/07) ING Concludes Academic Year 2006-2007 with Record Number of Interfaith Events The public impact of religion has increased worldwide according to recent data and trends. Here in the U.S. according to a Harris Poll in January 2003, 90% of Americans believe in God, 84% believe in the survival of the soul after death, and 82% believe in heaven. At the same time, religious grievances have been significant factors in civil wars, national conflicts and international acts of terrorism. For this reason, it has never been more important to reinforce and promote American ideals of tolerance and freedom of religion that is enshrined in the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. It is to this end that ING today is more engaged than ever before in interfaith dialogues and education, seeking to promote understanding through civil discourse. Read MoreListening to Those We Serve
The entire experience of planning a series of seminars with ING was inspirational. They did an amazing job. The ING team welcomed input along the way which allowed each session to be even better than the one before it. We will continue to work with ING as I am confident that they will continue to provide value in our work.

I thought the ING seminar, “Preventing and Responding to Anti-Muslim Bigotry,” was an extremely valuable training for law enforcement, especially in today’s day and age with all the misunderstandings and misperceptions of the Muslim community…I feel this training will help my staff and I in developing better relationships and in responding to the needs of our community. I highly recommend this training to others.
