On Monday March 24th, representatives from various community organizations, government, & law enforcement agencies were invited to participate in ING’s Press Conference. The topic for the conference was: “The Impact of War on Students of Muslim & Middle Eastern Background”, and the program was from 10:00 – 12:00 pm at the ING office in San Jose, California. Joining the Bay Area’s Japanese American community on Sunday, February 16th, ING commemorated Japanese American internment during WWII at the annual 2003 “Day of Remembrance”. Under Executive Order #9066, President Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered the removal of 120,000 persons of Japanese ancestry, of whom most were American citizens, into concentration camps, which were bound by barbed wire and guard towers. In the months preceding internment, 31,000 men of Japanese descent were arrested and detained, along with German & Italian men. ING along with ISBs from 14 other cities met from January 17th until January 20th, 2003 in Atlanta, GA for the Annual ING Affiliates conference. The conference served to provide a platform for exchange of ideas, information and resources in nationally expanding “Teaching America About Islam” outreach programs. The entire experience of planning a series of seminars with ING was inspirational. They did an amazing job. The ING team welcomed input along the way which allowed each session to be even better than the one before it. I thought the ING seminar, “Preventing and Responding to Anti-Muslim Bigotry,” was an extremely valuable training for law enforcement, especially in today’s day and age with all the misunderstandings and misperceptions of the Muslim community…I feel this training will help my staff and I in developing better relationships and in responding to the needs of our community.
