Understanding Ramadan: Identity, Practice, and Workplace Accommodations

In response to requests from employers and Muslim employees, ING Deputy Director and scholar of religion, Zachary Markwith, PhD, recorded a 20-minute video that educates viewers on Ramadan, Islam’s month of fasting, and ways to support Muslim colleagues. It is structured in three parts:

• Part I: Muslim Identity (1:01 – 7:36) – Examines what it means to be Muslim, including core beliefs, cultural diversity, and the role of faith in daily life.
• Part II: Understanding Ramadan (7:37 – 13:40) – Highlights the significance of fasting, spiritual practices, and how Ramadan fosters self-discipline, gratitude, and community.
• Part III: Workplace Accommodations (13:41 – 18:40) – Covers common requests such as flexible scheduling, prayer breaks, and considerations for workplace gatherings.
