Law Enforcement: Preventing & Responding to Anti-Muslim Bigotry POST-Certified Cultural Diversity (IGP) Course # 1384-49200 Now Offered Online via Webinar! Hate crimes against Muslim Americans have increased five-fold since 9/11! Even during the present pandemic, Islamophobic associations have been made linking Muslims, mosques, and the spread of the coronavirus. Under the POST Innovations Grant, ING offers POST-certified courses for police officers and staff on preventing and responding to hate crimes against Muslim Americans in your locality. ING has over 25 years of experience successfully delivering seminars to law enforcement agencies. Our POST-certified courses are free of charge, designed in two-, four-, and eight-hour blocks, and are available to be delivered online via webinar or in-person across the state of California by our instructors, who are led by Maha Elgenaidi, a long-time POST advisor on hate crimes and cultural diversity training. A course outline can be found here. Course Description: The course is in two parts. The first part addresses Muslim American demographics, profiles, beliefs, traditions and misconceptions. The second part covers policing best practices that includes a discussion on Islamophobia and its roots, hate crime stats and cases, hate crime policing, and what you need to know for day to day interactions with Muslim individuals and institutions as well as steps for building relations. Dozens of courses have been delivered or are scheduled to be delivered before the end of this year. A commander had this to stay about the course: “I thought that the training was outstanding. It was relevant, informative, and engaging while remaining within the allotted time. I think this is a training all public officials could benefit from and I learned a lot about Islam and Muslims that I did not know. Everything I learned can be put to practical use and will ensure we continue to offer the highest standards of service to all members of our community.” – Corporal, Morgan Hill Police Department, 2020 Training on how to work with Muslim Americans on preventing and responding to hate crimes is increasingly important at present because of growing Islamophobia, as evidenced, for instance, by a 2017 Pew Research Center study that found Muslims are regarded the most negatively of all faith groups in the US, the sharp rise in hate crimes and hate groups since the 2016 election cycle, and the 2020 FBI elevation of domestic racially-motivated violent extremism to a “national security priority.” We invite you to learn more about how this training prepares police officers to engage with Muslim American communities by developing their cultural competency skills, their understanding of Islamophobia and its interconnection with other forms of bigotry, and their knowledge of hate crimes and how to respond to them effectively. The training is practice-oriented, providing tips on building relationships with grassroots communities on their beat and offering tools that are transferable to other communities with which police officers interact. Here’s what another commander had to say about the course: “I thought it was an extremely valuable training, especially in today’s day and age with all the misunderstandings and misperceptions of the Muslim community. I had a lot of takeaways, even though I’ve been around a lot of Muslims living in the Bay Area. But I definitely learned a lot and added additional tools to my tool belt, which I think will help me and my staff in developing better relationships and responding effectively to the community’s needs. I highly recommend this training.” – Sergeant, Union City Police Department, 2020 Audience: Police chiefs, captains, lieutenants and sergeants; senior detectives, investigators and staff; sheriffs and deputy sheriffs; other law enforcement administrators and leaders; police officers.
