If Muslim Americans are experiencing such high rates of bigotry, it is incumbent upon all of us to address the source of the problem in order to prevent more harm. This bigotry is generally due to people’s ignorance or misrepresentations of Islam and/or because they have never gotten to know a Muslim. The situation is exacerbated by the media since, according to several studies, 80% of media coverage about Islam is negative. Additionally, very few television shows feature a positive Muslim character, less than 10% of movies include a Muslim character in a speaking role, and popular video games often feature Muslims as the enemy.

The struggle for an inclusive and just society has never been more important, which is why I am asking you to help us support the many professionals who work hard in their Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging programs through education, training, and engagement.

At ING we don’t just work to counter Islamophobia. We counter other bigotries alongside our speakers from the Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist, Christian, Black, Asian, Latino/Hispanic and Native American communities because the sources of bigotry are similar and connected and should be opposed together.
