Coexistence through Art
(San Jose, 11/26/07) Reflecting a new era of Jewish-Muslim American relations across the nation, ING has partnered and worked for the last two years on joint programs with the Jewish Community Relations Councils of San Francisco, East Bay, Peninsula and Silicon Valley. Our objective is peace through religious literacy and mutual respect. Projects have included monthly gatherings, Common Ground Speakers Series and Interfaith Panels, whose topics have focused on commonalities, differences and shared experiences as minority faiths, such as stereotyping: Islamophobia and Anti-Semitism; maintaining our faiths in a secular society; religious fundamentalism and extremism; “December Dilemma” during the winter holiday season, etc. Read More
ING Statement on the British Teacher in Sudan
(12/01/07) Gillian Gibbons, a British teacher, who allowed her students to name a teddy bear Muhammad was found guilty on Thursday, November 29, by a Sudanese court and sentenced to 15 days in jail & deportation. According to an AP article, “during her trial, a weeping Gibbons said she intended no harm. Her students, overwhelmingly Muslim, chose the name for the bear, and Muhammad is one of the most common names for men in the Arab world. Muslim scholars generally agree that intent is a key factor in determining if someone has violated Islamic rules against insulting the prophet.” Read More
