ING's Outstanding Pen Award for Inter-Religious Understanding

On Thursday, February 21st, ING will be presenting Karen Armstrong with an “Outstanding Pen Award for Inter-religious Understanding” for her writings on Islam and other world religions. Karen Armstrong is one of the world’s leading commentators on religious affairs. She is a best-selling author whose books have been translated into 40 languages. Her early work focused on the monotheistic faiths of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, but she has since begun to explore the Eastern religions. Her work is scholarly but written for the general reader, and has been appreciated not only by Western audiences but also by Muslims, Buddhists, and Hindus. Her books include: Through the Narrow Gate, an autobiographical work; The Gospel According to Woman; Holy War, The Crusades and their Impact on Today’s World; Muhammad, A Biography of the Prophet; A History of God; Jerusalem, One City, Three Faiths; and The Battle for God, A History of Fundamentalism. ING Statement Regarding Danish Cartoons

(2/3/06) In late September last year, a Danish newspaper, Morgenavisen Jyllands-Posten published 12 different cartoonists’ idea of what the Prophet Muhammed might have looked like as part of an ongoing public debate on the topic of freedom of expression in Denmark. The cartoons included demeaning depictions of the Prophet Muhammad, including one with a bomb in his turban and another with him leaving paradise saying it had run out of virgins. In response to these and other unpublished drawings that began circulating in the Middle East, and after months of mild complaining, Muslims across the world began to protest and boycott Danish products, while some governments, such as Libya and Saudi Arabia withdrew their ambassadors from Denmark. While the editors of the Danish paper recently apologized for any upset they may have caused, the furor threatens to escalate with the new publication of the Danish caricatures and other religiously denigrating cartoons by other European dailies, including French and British papers. We often overlook the importance of this commemoration, or don’t feel connected to it, yet Muslim Americans today reap the benefits of the struggle that he and others in the civil rights movement strived and sacrificed for. All people of color – and all Americans owe these pioneers a debt of gratitude for reasserting the values that this nation was founded on, values such as “liberty, freedom and justice for all” that have not always been applied to all people.
